The Long Hello ~ The Other Side of Alzheimer's By: Cathie Borrie
In this shimmering jewel of a memoir, "The Long Hello ~ The Other Side of Alzheimer's", author Cathie Borrie traverses rich terrain as she unearths the hidden and often painful treasures of a life well lived: the shadows and joys of childhood, the relationships that leave us both illuminated and bereft, the love, longing and loss that surge to the fore when a parent is ailling. Memory, and the losing of it, serves as a powerful guide, and Borrie follows her mother's eccentric and poetic lead into the past, transformed by the unexpected brilliance of the elder woman's shifting dementia mind. A paean of redemptive beauty, "The Long Hello" cherishes the bond between mothers and daughters, and creates a startling change in society's perception of those journeying through Alzheimer's.

Cutting for Stone By: Abraham Verghese
My husband Cam and I both really enjoyed this book so it’s not just chick-lit. It’s filled with interesting historical and cultural aspects. Still, underneath it all there is deep look at what constitutes “family” and what can tear families apart. Oh and there are some big surprises too.
Here is the synopsis - An epic novel that spans continents and generations, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, compassion and redemption, exile and home that unfolds across five decades in India, Ethiopia, and America.
Narrated by Marion Stone, the story begins even before Marion and his twin brother, Shiva, are born in Addis Ababa’s Missing Hospital (a mispronunciation of “Mission Hospital”), with the illicit, years-in-the-making romance between their parents, Sister Mary Joseph Praise, a beautiful Indian nun, and Thomas Stone, a brash, brilliant British surgeon. Mary and Thomas meet on a boat out of Madras in 1947; she follows him to Ethiopia and to Missing, where they work side by side for seven years as nurse and doctor. After Mary dies while giving birth to the twins --- a harrowing, traumatic scene on the operating table --- Thomas vanishes, and Marion and Shiva grow up with only a dim sense of who he was, and with a deep hostility toward him for what they see as an act of betrayal and cowardice.
Stanley Park By: Timothy Taylor (2003)
I’d been meaning to read this for years and finally found the time this summer when I picked it up at a used book sale on one of the Gulf Islands. Filled with local references, you can easily picture the characters traipsing around Lost Lagoon and other downtown spots. Intriguing for foodies, those who are concerned that corporations are taking over and anyone who’s ever wondered what it might be like to live under a tarp near 3rd Beach.
